Our project began as a loosely defined plan to retire to a less extreme
climate. Living in Oklahoma, we wanted to move somewhere that was warmer in
the winter and cooler in the summer. Researching several states in Mexico,
we virtually [quite literally] worked our way around its coast until we came
to the Caribbean. I was 33 years young before seeing crystal blue
waters anywhere but in a photograph.
When we made it to Belize, it was love at first sight.
Unlike Mexico, the foreign land ownership rules of Belize were concise
and to the point: freehold title to real property was possible with a
reasonably higher title transfer charge for expatriates than those of
Belizean nationals. No corporations need be set up. Waterfront property
could be purchased. Taxes were manageable. This made Belize our primary
relocation consideration.
The
District
We liked the idea of traveling a short distance in any
direction to experience a geographical change, so the Cayo district became
our original target for settlement. The northern district of Corozal
did not interest us in the least. Described by various writers as
"relatively flat," "a crossroads between Mexico and Belize" and "mostly
farming," among other phrases, the images presented sounded much like our
own home state, but without the cold. However, after arriving in Corozal, we
discovered that many of these references hadn't given the Corozal district
fair credit it deserved for it's friendly people, natural beauty, serene
lifestyle, and ease of water accessibility to many points in Belize and the
Yucatan
.
The Community
Consejo village is a quiet community located 8 miles
northeast of Corozal and approximately 2 miles south of Mexico's Quintana
Roo state capital of Chetumal. Within the village is located a super-mini,
The New Millennium Family Restaurant, St. Leo Catholic Church, Derek's
Cozy Corner, Casablanca resort, and Belize Customs House.
Take a short photo tour of Consejo here. Our lot lies on the southeast
side of the village loop, right across from the park and next to the public
boat launch.
